hi *g* (you could have used my name -- it wouldn't have bothered me, but that was nice of you. :D )

You know, even before I saw this I was thinking more about why the "passing" comment made me uncomfortable. I guess it was that as someone who is outside that cultural group, I was concerned that people inside it would find the comment offensive. I'm not Jewish, but a good portion of my social circle is (my roommate in college, my boss for 9 years, a couple my husband and I have had a Gourmet Club with since 1996, etc. *g*) and I have never once heard any of them use the term "pass", so it really made me sit up and take notice.

I guess the term, to me, implies that it's desirable to be something other than what they are, and I can't imagine any of my friends wanting to do so. Then again, prior to moving out to the ex-urbs *g* I was in a very urban environment with a large Jewish population, so maybe it's different in less metropolitan areas. I'm going to ask some of my friends about it, b/c now I'm really curious.

(And at the risk of being too PC here *g* I hope I didn't offend you by saying I was offended. Truly not my intention. *g* )
